Training & accreditation
Many people use the results of house energy ratings: homeowners, designers, builders, building certifiers, building regulators, real estate agents and researchers.
Reliable results come from trained assessors who understand how buildings are constructed and how they interact with the environment. Many organisations provide training in one or more of the software tools.
Recognised qualification
To ensure that ratings produced for regulatory purpose are completed to a high quality, a training program has been developed and successful candidates can be awarded the qualification Building Thermal Performance Assessment (Residential). This qualification is recognised under the Australian Qualifications Framework, and all suitable registered training authorities are able to train and test candidates. Interested registered training authorities should contact the NatHERS National Administrator.
Accredited assessors
Conformance to codes of professional practice and/or additional qualifications may
be needed to be accredited as a competent assessor in some jurisdictions. The
arrangements may depend on the software package selected and the requirements of the
local building authority. Many building regulation authorities accept ratings only
from formally accredited assessors recognised by NatHERS.
Find an accredited assessor
Towards nationwide consistency
The Australian Greenhouse Office is preparing a NatHERS Protocol for Assessor
Accrediting Organisations to define essential competencies and standards for
training, practice, support, auditing and reporting. When implemented, this protocol
will allow a nationwide approach to training and accreditation of assessors for
building regulatory purposes.
Second generation training
The Association of Building Sustainability Assessors (ABSA) has been accredited by the NatHERS National Administration to offer training and accreditation arrangements for second generation software. Other training bodies are in the process of upgrading their courses to meet the needs of the new qualification.
